Book of lists - 1st May 1863 to July 1877
There are
basically three types of quarterly lists in this volume. One begins with shoreside staff, including those employed in the dockyards
and then continues with an alphabetical listing of officers employed afloat and
some employed ashore, including masters, gunners and clerks. Incidentally,
because of the then status, the employment of some of these individuals
required more explanation than previously. The second relates to engineers and
apprentices as in the earlier listings. The third are casualty returns, again
in the earlier format. It should be pointed out that not all these quarterly
returns have apparently survived.

This is one of two
volumes described as ‘Returns of Officers...’. This
has been very badly catalogued. Instead this is a very useful source,
for the two months now available for study. It would seem that these were
annual returns. As well as detailing dockyard staff, these
are in effect paybooks for the Bombay Marine’s
vessels and includes native mariners.
