Information
and Examples of Establishment Lists for Officers in the Bombay Marine and
Indian Navy

On microfilm,
these are hand-written lists in the conventional sense, giving dates of
‘commissions’ for most years, including midshipmen/volunteers (the latter
obviously without dates of commissions). Also, from 1776 lists of surgeons are
included. However, they do not include pursers, boatswains, gunners etc. Being
such a small force, it is not unrealistic to search through these when tracing
careers, although the handwriting can be difficult to make out in places.
It should be noted
that there are years missing particularly in the 19th century, but
the notes of ‘years wanting’ cannot be relied upon.

IOR: L/MAR/C/738 - Engineers, Boilermakers and Apprentices. Lists from Bombay
giving age, service, &c. - July 1847 to May 1849
There are dated ‘Statements
of the under-mentioned Engineers belonging to the Honourable Company’s Steam Vefsels of War...’. In seniority
these begin with the non-effective list; continue with the old establishment;
the establishment of the factory; and go on to those of the new establishment.
In lowest seniority are country trained and native engineers. After officers
proper are lists of Engineers’ Apprentices, some of which are described as
journeymen. In effect these resemble brief details normally found in service lists.
It should be noted that at this point engineers not shown in the Indian Navy
List.

Indian Navy April 1860 to January 1863
As well as
hand-written copies, presumably for making up the list, there are printed
copies of Her Majesty’s Indian Navy List. Incidentally, apart from line
officers, including mates and midshipmen; there are also pursers and captains’
clerks; as well as masters down to acting 2nd masters; and of
course, engineers, including engineer apprentices.
